Shortwave radios are also known as radio broadcasts, having a portion of radio spectrum in frequency range from 3,000 - 30,000 kHz. Shortwave radios received their name because of the shorter wavelengths than the earlier invented radios, which had longer wavelengths. The shortwave radios were used by civilian as military frequency voice services to contact ships at sea (or even aircraft). In January 1939 Norway started broadcasting shortwave radios, as one of the first countries.
